Sometimes I don’t remember the differences in some ASP.NET data controls. What are the differences in a DataGrid and DataList, which controls allow to create a custom layout?. To help me and maybe You, I decided to present a table of some ASP.NET data bound controls, and short info about functionality (in tabullar manner). Similar controls I painted with a similar color. Implemented functionality in control is tagged with an icon ok.

I took attention to these functionalities:

  • Control – control name and a link to MSDN with more info
  • Layout – the control requires that the programmer should define the layout, otherwise the control contains a defined HTML structure
  • Add,Edit,Delete,Select,Sort, Paging – data manipulation that is implemented
  • Styles – user can define styles through control not only directly through CSS – as You can see it is related to Layout state
