[EN] How fast my browser solves sudoku + HAPPY HOLIDAYS

One day, when browsing the Internet I found a comment in one IT forum about Sudoku and IE9. The whole comment was about solving execution time of Sudoku game and was about that the IE9 Beta version is very slow, and the best solving browser is Chrome. The next commend (from another user) said that IE9 Platform Preview 7 beats Chrome. I was a bit confused, so I decided to create a test on my own PC.

What is sudoku and how it works You can find on Wikipedia, so I will ommit the explanation. I will take attention only to the test.

The Test

Used browsers: Chrome 8.0.552.224, Firefox 4b8, IE 9 Beta, IE9 Platform Preview 7 and Opera 11 compilation 1156

Test application: http://ie.microsoft.com/testdrive/Performance/Sudoku/Default.html
Run: Each browser was tested 15 times. 5 times with solving 1000 games, 5 times with solving 5000 games and 5 times solving 10000 games.

Results

are presented below in a tabular format. The best results (time in seconds) reached IE 9 PP7, then Chrome and after that Opera. The difference between the best and worst run in a five time run was not very high, so I ommited them in this table and took only the average from all five runs.

Browser 1000 5000 10000
Chrome 8.0.552.224 0.211 1.096 2.184
Firefox 4b8 0.245 1.264 2.492
IE 9 Beta 0.828 4.23 8.4
IE 9 PP7 0.179 0.921 1.863
Opera 11 0.242 1.243 2.447

Happy Holidays

Browsing another tests on IE9 Test Drive I found some Christmas tests – one of them was the Happy Holidays. The Test results are presented below with an additional screenshot from IE9 PP7. The winner is IE9 PP7, then IE9 Beta and Firefox 4b8.

The Test

Used browsers: Chrome 8.0.552.224, Firefox 4b8, IE 9 Beta, IE9 Platform Preview 7 and Opera 11 compilation 1156

Test application: http://ie.microsoft.com/testdrive/HTML5/Blizzard/Default.html
